30 April

Good morning grade 9’s
Please find attached the memo for the work on stems, prefixes and suffixes as well as today’s work.
This term we need to start working on the different types of sentences: simple, compound and complex sentences. But in order for us to work with them we first need to learn a couple of other things. The first thing we will be looking at finite and non-finite verbs, then phrases and clauses, then we will look at and focus on clauses and then we can get to simple, compound and complex sentences.
Instructions:
• Mark your work on stems, prefixes and suffixes and remember to have your parent/ guardian sign your corrections! Then complete today’s work.
o File: I will send a picture with the answers.
Finite and non-finite verbs:
• Heading: Finite and non-finite verbs.
• Copy down the slides in your writing books, language section.
• Complete Activity 14, pg. 107.
None of the work is really new. You learned all of this in grades 7 and 8. So now you should be able to more easily understand the work. This also means that our activities on the work is going to be more complex than last year, but I believe you will be able to handle it.
Note: If you have problems opening the files please let me know. Remember to keep your phone’s software up to date.
If you have any questions feel free to pm me between 8:00 – 15:00.

Good morning grade 9’s
TAKE NOTE: If you are a late arrival to the WhatsApp group you need to catch up. Visit the school’s website for any work that you might not have gotten. Please note that I am continuing with work and it is your responsibility to catch up. Also note that if you have been on the group for a while and only now report that you could not download work we did in previous weeks it is your responsibility to get it from a friend or from the school’s site. You can’t be part of the group and only now decide that you don’t want to fall behind. Now, let’s continue working together on some new language structures.
Please find attached the memo for the work on pronouns (part 2) as well as today’s work.
Today we will be looking at stems, prefixes and suffixes. When doing this work keep a picture of a flower in your head:
• The stem/ root word is the most basic form of the word, meaning that nothing has been added to the word, nor can you make the word smaller. We will be using the word “happy” in the slides as an example. This word is thus the stem of the flower.
• Prefixes are letters added to the front of the stem/root word to change its tense, meaning or function in a sentence. The prefix is this the leaves growing on the stem.
• A suffix functions the same as the prefix, only it is letters added to the back of the root word. Suffixes are then the petals of the flower.
When the flower starts growing the first thing we see is the flower’s stem (stem/ root word). As the flower gets older it starts growing leaves (prefixes) and when the flower is even bigger it buds beautiful petals (suffixes) which is the last thing of the flower to grow, like you would add letters to the back of the word.
Instructions:
• Mark your pronouns (part 2) activity and remember to have your parent/ guardian sign your corrections! Then complete today’s work.
o File: I will send a picture with the answers.
Stems, prefixes and suffixes:
• Heading: Stems, prefixes and suffixes.
• Copy down the slides in your writing books, language section.
• Complete:
o Activity 7, pg.90
o Activity 10, pg. 104
o Activity 3, pg.111
o Activity 8, pg. 114
Note: If you have problems opening the files please let me know. Remember to keep your phone’s software up to date.

Good morning grade 9’s
I hope that you are up to speed with your Lord of the Flies. As said in my previous message, we are going to do some language.
Today’s work is not new! You have done parts of speech since grade 7 and earlier this year. This means that you should know what a “noun” is. Today’s work focuses on the different types of nouns. You should have done different types of nouns before in your schooling career – we do it too, just at a slightly more difficult level.
Instructions:
• Heading: Nouns + today’s date (month written out in full and in English!)
• Copy down the attached slides in the language section of your writing books. File name: Nouns
• Remember to only copy down the black font and not the pink.
• Complete the attached nouns activity. File name: Noun activity learner copy

17 April

Good afternoon grade 9’s. I am sure that your Lord of the Flies reading is up to date. Starting Monday I am going to give language exercises based on last year and last term’s work. It will also serve as an introduction to the language which we need to cover this coming term. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

14 April

Good morning grade 9’s
I hope that you have enjoyed your holiday and getting back into the working mode. As you know you need to stay sharp and ahead with the work if you wish to do well in English.
I gave you up until chapter 6 to read and answer the questions and explained that those chapters need to be completed for next term. I assume those chapters have been finished. Remember that YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE THE ANSWERS IF YOU DID NOT DO THE WORK. “Ma’am, I forgot my book at school,” is not a valid excuse – if you left your work at school after being instructed to take it home, it is your problem to solve, the consequences of work not being completed stays the same.
Seeing as the lockdown is extended I will communicate new work via the WhatsApp group.

Today’s work:
I have attached links to Spark Notes which is a study guide for literature. Please read the summaries and analysis for chapters 1 – 6. Herewith follows the link to each chapter:
Chapter 1: https://www.sparknotes.com/lit/flies/section1/
Chapter 2: https://www.sparknotes.com/lit/flies/section2/
Chapter 3: https://www.sparknotes.com/lit/flies/section3/

Chapter 5: https://www.sparknotes.com/lit/flies/section5/
Chapter 6: https://www.sparknotes.com/lit/flies/section6/
You will be given 2 days to read these notes.

On Thursday 16 April 2020 I will give you further instructions.
